Chopper rescues three hikers

- JESSICA PAUL

THREE hikers have been winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after one suffered an injury in a remote national park near Roma.

The three women were on the third day of a trek along the Carnarvon Great Walk when one of the group, a woman in her 20s, injured her ankle and was unable to walk any further.

Paramedics and a LifeFlight rescue helicopter were called to the scene about 11am last Wednesday after the trio set off a personal locator beacon to raise the alarm.

A LifeFlight critical care paramedic was winched to the scene to assess the woman’s injuries before she was hoisted up to the chopper. The injured woman was flown to Roma Hospital in a stable condition for treatment.

Her fellow hikers were uninjured and were flown to a base camp at the start of the walking track.
