Aussie honours on offer

- JASON GIBBS

TOUCH FOOTBALL: There’s still a lot ground to cover, but a host of young Toowoomba players are one step closer to wearing Aussie green and gold.

Ben Moore, Ryan Ward, Matthew Moore, Jada Ferguson (pictured) and Emily Ward have all earned National Youth Squad selection ahead of the 2022 Youth Trans Tasman Test Series.

The group will attend a selection camp in January next year in preparation for the April series in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Having represented Australia once at the under-18, Ben Moore is looking to add U20 honours to his resume.

“It’s very exciting,” Moore said.

“I’ve been playing a lot of footy lately so it’s good to see that paying off.

“Having represented Australia once before I’d love to do it again.

“It’s an honour in any sport to be able to represent your country.

“I’m really excited for (brother) Matthew as well.

“We’ve played a lot of footy together lately and he’s been doing really well.”

Having played at every level of the game Moore has a fair understanding of what is needed to earn representative honours and his focus will be a simple one at the selection camp.

“You can’t be selfish,” he said.

“You have to put the team’s needs above your.

“You have to work hard for the team and be fully committed.

“I think defence is really important as well.

“Not everyone likes defending but it’s just as important as the attacking side of the game.

“Being in the middle I love defending.”
