Fatal car crash case makes it to court

- JESSICA PAUL

THE Warwick man charged with causing the horror car crash that killed community figure Greg Newey has had his matters mentioned in court.

Police allege Brock Jules Hamers crashed his Ford Falcon ute into the Porsche driven by Mr Newey (pictured) and his wife Beth while turning from Myall Ave into Wood St on September 14 last year.

The Porsche flipped and Mr Newey, who was 76 years old, died at the scene, while Mrs Newey sustained several injuries in the crash, and spent days in hospital.

Mr Hamers faces one charge each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm.

The 22-year-old man was also charged with leaving the scene without obtaining help.

Mr Hamers was initially hospitalised, and was discharged within days of the fatal crash.

He was arrested and charged on September 22.

Defence barrister Jessica Goldie told the Warwick District Court that the matter was first listed for sentence in this month’s sittings, but a recommendation for further psychiatric assessment had pushed back the final proceedings.

Mr Hamers was not required to appear in person when his matter was mentioned in court.

His case will next be heard in Warwick District Court in the first sittings of 2022.

Mr Hamers was remanded in custody until that date.
