Lockyer defeated in final moments

- SEAN TEUMA

RUGBY LEAGUE: Lockyer District SHS has gone down in the most heartbreaking of circumstances.

With the NRL Queensland Schoolboys Trophy seemingly in their grasp, two late tries to St Augustine’s College gave the Cairns school a 20-18 victory.

Lockyer started strongest and heaped pressure on St Augustine’s, capitalising with Cooper Liston putting Hayden Dunn over.

Their rivals responded to level the scores at 4-all, before a powerful burst from strike centre Shoneton Karapen saw him fend one away, barge over another defender to take an 8-4 lead that they would hold at the break.

A breakaway try to St Augustine’s again levelled things up, and Lockyer looked to be firmly under the pump as they again had their line tested.

Enter Caeleb Nagan, who picked off a pass and raced 95m to swing the momentum back to his side and take back the lead.

That lead was extended to 18-10 soon after, with a spectacular cutout pass from Mason Potter giving Dunn his second try of the afternoon.

Just as they looked set for victory, two tries in the final five minutes from St Augustine’s swung the result back in their favour, with no time left for a response.
