The Chronicle

Tip top renovation

-

ON WEDNESDAY evening I enjoyed very much attending the Toowoomba Chamber of

Commerce Business at Dusk event held at Rowes Furniture in Keefe Street, off Victoria Street.

The building occupied by Rowes since 1925 now hosts the Toowoomba Chronicle upstairs, and it was good to see the office where The Chronicle now sits.

In the 1970s my mum would take the kids to Rowes nearly every time we went downtown, and I have some fond memories of the store at the time.

We all have memories of the devastating 2011 Toowoomba flood and Rowes furniture floating down Russell Street, the scene posted on the front page of almost every newspaper in the world at the time.

I heard of how the owners of Rowes were thinking of giving up the business after this happened, but it was the many Toowoomba volunteers who helped Rowes clean up and recover that convinced the owners to continue and grow the business further.

Today the Rowes building is an impressive piece of heritage listed architecture, and some of the redevelopment work carried out is awesome.
