Endeavour’s new unit plan

- TOM GILLESPIE

A MAJOR Australian not-forprofit organisation has revealed plans to build more social housing in Toowoomba to support its clients.

The Endeavour Foundation lodged a development application last week with the Toowoomba Regional Council for three three-bedroom units on Hursley Road at Newtown.

The land is currently vacant and just a short walk from Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre.

According to the report by Town Planning Alliance, the units will be specially designed to be accessible for people in wheelchairs or with disabilities.

“The building envelope comprises of three single storey three-bedroom townhouses,” the report said.

“The development is designed to be fully accessible for people with a disability and provide housing choice in the (Toowoomba) community.

“The development is sought by Endeavour Foundation to provide additional housing for their customers within proximity to the services and public transport of Newtown,” the report said.

The development is considered code-assessable because the land is located in a low-medium density residential zone.

Plans were also submitted around civil engineering and landscaping at the site.

The council has yet to respond to the application.

It comes just three months after the charity opened five new homes as part of its $35m My Home, My Life initiative to address shortages in social housing.

“One of the criteria for our new homes was that we had them built in the community, close to shopping centres, close to public transport, and this home is a classic example of that,” CEO Andrew Donne said at the time.

“This is the biggest investment in accessible housing that we have ever made.”

The Endeavour Foundation has said it will spend another $6m on 12 new homes over three years.
