- DARLING DOWNS

A steam saw mill has been erected at Toowoomba, Darling Downs, by Mr Ballard, and is now in full operation.

Henry Howard, committed for trial at Drayton, for stealing watches and jewellery, made his escape from the watchhouse there Oct. 6.

He had been handcuffed to a very strong chain, which was fastened with bolts to an ironbark sleeper.

He made a desperate effort, slipped his hand through them, and then made his exit by forcing one of the slabs out of the chimney.

A lunatic, who had been confined with him, and whom he attempted to seduce into liberty, refused to accompany him, and gave the alarm. Howard has not yet been taken. Northern Times, October 27, 1858
