- SEAN TEUMA

RACING: Toowoomba’s flagship race is filled with tradition, dating back more than 130 years since its inaugural running many moons ago.

Clifford Park has played host to some memorable instalments of the Listed feature.

With Toowoomba’s biggest race day set to return this weekend for the 2021 edition, The Chronicle ranks the best 10 wins in the race over the last 20 years.

10. TYPHOON RED 2014

Kevin Kemp brought up his record-equalling fourth Weetwood Handicap in style, training the quinella in the 2014 edition.

Sitting midfield, a welltimed move from Nozi Tomizawa proved decisive, with the gelding holding off stablemate Kempelly to score by a head.

9. SEXY EYES 2019

Australia’s biggest trainer Chris Waller had his sights set on a Weetwood, and he had the right mare for the job.

The classy type added to her resume with the 2019 edition, breaking a track record in the process with a slick time of 1:10.50 for the six furlongs.

8. AMANAAT 2018

Amanaat turned the 2018 Weetwood into a one-act affair after launching an explosive turn of foot in the home straight for trainer Ben Currie.

It gave the local his first outright Weetwood after dead-heating the year prior.

The gelding retired from racing a year later with nine wins from 17 race starts.

7. JADENTOM 2020

A cheer so loud it could be heard across the Downs.

Lindsay Hatch collected his first Weetwood with Jadentom, the mare named after this two children, stormed home to collect the prize.

The gutsy mare retired earlier this year with 13 wins and more than $500,000 in prizemoney to her name.

6. CHOICE BRO 2016

The 2016 Weetwood was a hot instalment, with the Bjorn Baker-trained Coolring a dominant favourite on the back of a placing in a Sydney Group 3.

It was Tony Sears’ moment however, with Choice Bro launching a barnstorming finish to come from a clear last to blouse the favourite right on the line.

5. VOICE COMMANDER 2009

The 2009 Weetwood had a distinct southern feel, with Canberra’s Nick Olive (Voice Commander) and Goulburn’s Danny Williams (Wasted Emotions) heavily in the market.

It would prove to be Voice Commander’s time to shine, with the gelding leading all the way to take Toowoomba’s feature back to the capital.
