The Chronicle

Saving energy

ALLOW me to congratulate The Chronicle management for their decision to flat-wrap the paper for delivery. At last, no more struggling to unwrap and flatten out a tightly rolled, sunbaked and stubbornly uncooperative coil of newsprint.

More often than not, I had to resort to the microwave; usually 30 seconds to loosen the usual creases but sometimes more than a minute for the worst, after which the paper was prone to catching fire.

My wife informs me that it would be best to use an iron but since we can’t afford a valet I don’t see what she’s on about.

But now, thankfully it’s goodbye to the inconvenience of trying to eat one’s breakfast while wreathed in smoke and batting out the occasional flare up, meanwhile trying to maintain some semblance of decorum.

Add to this the environmental gains from not using all that electricity and we have, as the politicians say, a win-win. Well done!

May I suggest next on the list of journalistic improvements should be a more comprehensive daily listing – or any daily listing, for that matter – of imminent Carnival of Flowers attractions.

I refer, in particular, to fireworks displays, so that the uninformed outlying populace will not waste time phoning each other to find out what all the shooting is about, as happened last weekend.
