How about a sponsor?
CAREER advancement may instead lie in having a sponsor who can put you forward for opportunities, advocate for you, and back you.
Professional Leaders Institute founder Felicity Furey says mentors are a great sympathetic confidant, and can provide advice and share insights. But she says sponsors can connect you with the right people, and help forge a pathway faster, especially if it is a path they have already trodden.
“Sponsors get you credibility in a room when you are not there,” she says. “There are many ways to find and meet a potential sponsor. It could be at a networking event in the industry you want to be in (or) asking someone in your network if they know anyone who would be a good sponsor based on your goals.” Furey says sponsors need to have the right experience and contacts, so clearly outline to them your goals or mission, and vision for your career.
“Be clear on you – this will attract the right sponsor to you,” she says.
