Speedway’s wild night at the track

SPEEDWAY: A wild night kicked off the local speedway season in Toowoomba.

Jaydon Peacock was caught upside down through the catch fence and was unable to be released from the car.

The car coming to rest on top of Darwin’s Ben Atkinson and it took 20 minutes for the crash crew and medical staff to upright the car. Peacock eventually climbed out of the car with assistance shaken but unhurt.

Toowoomba’s Tarhlea Apelt made the sprintcar feature race on debut until an engine problem forced her to retire to the infield as did Scott Genritch. Anthony Lambert finished sixth and Nick Whell eighth.

Lachlan McHugh got the feature win after a thrilling and hard-fought A-Main event. McHugh went straight to the top of the racetrack and stayed there for the biggest part of the race.

Callum Walker crossed the line second after challengin­g for the lead in the last few laps of the race. The two raced sideby-side and negotiated traffic putting on a thrilling race for the spectators.

Atkinson, after winning the B-Main, rounded out the podium in third.

Early leader Cody Maroske seemed unstoppabl­e out in front until a deflated right rear tyre prematurel­y ended his race. Maroske winning the pole shuffle put him on the front row alongside Karl Hoffmans with McHugh and Aaron Kelly on the second row.

Ryan Newton impressed with a fourth-place finish while Mark Pholi rounded out the top five.

Toowoomba’s Robert Trapp won the street stock feature in spectacula­r style. Trapp led from the start up until lapped traffic came into play when Ryan Kahler slipped past him.

Trapp returned the gesture and regained the lead.

Speedway returns to HiTech Oils Speedway on October 9 for round 1 of the Ultimate Sprintcar Championsh­ip, the Will Power 500.
