Neers compete for gold

BASKETBALL: The Toowoomba Mountaineers will return home with a silver medal.

A gallant effort in the gold medal game of the Basketball Queensland U14s State Championships division three saw them fall 64-53 to the Emerald Chargers.

Despite Emerald having the height advantage, Toowoomba was able to start out strongest and get to an early 8-6 advantage.

The Chargers did just that to have the ascendancy of their own, before a late Mountaineers run led by Fynn Carmody and Jacob Walker gave them a 17-16 lead at the first break.

A blistering start to the quarter from Harrison Young saw him drain five quick points to give Toowoomba a 22-18 lead, before Emerald rallied back late to lead 33-29 at halftime.
