Punters ready for a day at the Weetwood races

- JARRARD POTTER

IT’S one of the biggest race days on the Toowoomba Turf Club calendar, and this year’s Audi Centre Toowoomba Weetwood Day is expected to be a big one.

With reserved dining sold out in record time, and not a spare general admission ticket in the house, Toowoomba Turf Club CEO Lizzy King said close to 5000 punters would be among the racing and fashion action at Clifford Park today.

“This is the biggest race meeting the club holds, and it’s the only metropolitan meeting in Queensland; we are number one so all eyes will be on us,” Ms King said.

Ms King said the highlights of the day’s action on the track were the four “black type” races, with more than $600,000 in prize money up for grabs for the stars of the Queensland racing industry.

“We’ve got a jam-packed day with a nine race card, headlined by the Audi Centre Weetwood Handicap 1200m, which is our biggest race of the year,” she said.

After patron numbers were cut in half last year due to Covid, Ms King said a return to some form of normality for the biggest racing day in Toowoomba was welcomed.

“We are absolutely sold out, there’s no tickets at the gate. We’ve had to observe Covid restrictions, but the response from guests was quite incredible,” she said.

For people who prefer their entertainment away from the track, Ms King said

they had plenty to look forward to.

“It’s the social event of the

year, and there’s a lot of people who spend a day at the races who don’t even see

a horse,” she said. “The fashions on the field will be very strong this year, and I

think people have stepped it up the extra mile, everyone is ready to treat themselves and

have a fantastic day.”

Gates open at 11am with the first race at 12.38pm.
