Nominate your 2032 Brisbane Olympics stars

- JASON GIBBS

OLYMPICS: Toowoomba and the Darling Downs has a rich and proud sporting history.

From rugby league and cricket to boxing and lawn bowls the region has produced countless sporting greats – including more than our fair share of Olympic superstars.

“There are a lot of theories about how we as a town and region have been able to perform above our population in terms of Olympians and great athletes,” Toowoomba Sports Hall of Fame chair Tony Coonan said.

“There’s no single thing in mind – it’s a combination of different factors.

“Our young players and athletes are given opportunities earlier in their lives to step up to that next level so they mature quicker but without the ego.

“We have a lot more room to move here compared to places like Brisbane but at the same time we have that proximity to other major centres to access further elite training and programs.

“Lastly I think administration plays a big part as well.

“We’ve been blessed with some fantastic administrators over the years which allows clubs and athletes to focus on their success.”

Now The Chronicle is looking for the next Olympic superstars.

We are currently compiling our “32 for 2032” – a list of athletes from across the region we would love to see at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

If you have a young athlete in any Olympic sport we’d love to hear from you.

Send your nomination, including a brief outline of their sporting achievements and goals to jason.gibbs@news.com.au
