Changes to local piggery

- TOM GILLESPIE

A PIGGERY operator has lodged plans to convert one of its Toowoomba region “farrow-to-finish” sites into a breeder-only facility, as part of a larger consolidation effort.

SP Northern Farming Operations, which owns and leases several piggeries across southern Queensland, put forward a proposal to create a breeder site at its Pinegrove Piggery on Millmerran-Cecil Plains Road at Turallin.

According to the planning report by Agricultural Development Services Australia, the proposal is in response to the recent approval of an expansion of the company’s grower sites at Lundavra.

“The proposed expansion will take the total capacity of the Lundavra site to approximately 131,000 standard pig units (SPU),” the report said.

“To supply the weaner pigs required for this site, the existing SP Northern owned or leased piggeries in the regions of Pittsworth and Millmerran will need to be converted from farrow-to-finish or grower sites to breeder-only sites.”

The council has yet to respond to the application.
