Festival coming to town

- TOM GILLESPIE

SOME of Queensland’s best Americana and folk musicians will converge on Toowoomba this weekend for a new charity festival celebrating the artform.

The On Higher Ground Toowoomba Americana and Folk Festival is coming to Bar Wunder on Sunday, with the event headlined by Brisbane songwriter Ruby Gilbert.

Organiser Michael Cook said the festival, which would be expanded in subsequent years, was also raising money for charity Help the Hungry.

The charity provides food to starving people in Vietnam.

“I’m a huge fan of the Festival of Small Halls concept, and Toowoomba has such fantastic facilities, so next year we’re hoping to have our own Festival of Small Venues, but all over Toowoomba,” he said.

“The work this charity is doing is simply incredible, so we’ll be auctioning off merchandise and other bits and pieces on the night with all proceeds going direct to the team in Vietnam.”

Other acts include Suicide Country Hour, Hillsborough, These Idle Hands, Sue Ray, Beef Cheek and the Salty Beans.
