Honouring fallen heroes

- RHYLEA MILLAR

FIREFIGHTERS who have lost their lives while or after making the ultimate sacrifice for others were honoured on Sunday at the Firefighters’ Remembrance Day, at the Kitchener St Fire Station.

The annual commemorative service pays tribute to the fallen heroes and offers a time for reflection on the tenth day of the tenth month every year.

Many firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty were mentioned on the honour roll, including Toowoomba Fire Brigade’s deputy superintendent Joseph William Thomson and Clifton Rural Fire Brigade’s district officer Ronald ‘Bill’ Hanes.

QFES superintendent for the South Western region Jason Lawler said while the environments that crews worked in were broad, the goal was always to keep the community safe.

“Today we remember our fallen colleagues and acknowledge their service, not only those who have passed, but those who are here today and serving around Queensland,” Mr Lawler said.

“It’s an important day not only for firefighters, but for their friends and family too and it’s important to pause and reflect on the dangers and environments that we send firefighters into.”
