Upgrades are in the works for Mitchell

- SAM TURNER

TWO exciting developments are set to breathe new life into the quaint town of Mitchell following the closure of two stores.

Design concepts have been released by the council detailing two options for the site of the Old Things Shop and Landcare at 48-52 Cambridge St.

Following on from community feedback received earlier in the year, the council said it had two design concepts developed.

Council documents revealed the plans involved constructing multiple office spaces, meeting rooms and toilets, as well as a green space and 17 car parks.

The designs also encompass community and furniture stores, an IT office, along with an arts gateway.

This development will take place on top of a bold plan to upgrade the town’s memorial park. Improvements in the masterplan included a climbing net and interlinking sky towers with a separate toddlers’ playground, as well as two barbecue areas, according to council documents.

A shade structure would also be provided to the skate park, with footpaths to be upgraded and extended around the western part of the park to incorporate a scooter track.

The council said the existing playground equipment would be relocated to the Mitchell Weir once work began, with the existing shade structures to be used with the new playground at the Mitchell Memorial Park site. The upgrades were to begin before the end of 2021, and be completed by the end of March 2022.
