Theft for drug habit

Woman stole from man she knew after being invited in

- SAM TURNER

A DALBY woman in search of money and drugs committed a brazen caravan burglary while two of her mates robbed its owner, even asking the victim for his card PIN.

Marisa Tennelle Caldwell was with two men about 2am on January 29, 2017 when she drove to another man’s caravan in Dalby and asked to come in.

Dalby District Court heard the then 38-year-old was invited in by the owner, who was known to her prior to the offending, while her two friends were told to stay outside.

The court heard the two men then barged their way in to the home to violently rob the caravan owner, while Caldwell stole aftershave, clothes, a phone, keys, shoes and a wallet.

Crown prosecutor Amy Stannard said Caldwell then asked the victim for his bank card PIN, to which he replied “get stuffed”.

Police spoke to the Dalby woman afterwards about another matter, and she confessed to the burglary before a complaint was even made.

Defence barrister Jessica Goldie said Caldwell, now 43, had been engaging in rehabilitation for her drug and alcohol use since being charged.

Judge Dennis Lynch said he was convinced Caldwell had been “influenced” to go to the victim’s caravan with the two men, and had gone to the address for “money or drugs”.

Caldwell was not part of a plan to carry out a robbery, the court heard, but she did take some items from the victim.

She pleaded guilty to burglary and stealing and was placed on probation for 18 months.
