Young leader tackles politics
AFTER the Queensland youth parliament was altered to an online format in 2020, Mahsa Nabizada was ecstatic to hear restrictions would not hinder her participation in the 2021 program.
Ms Nabizada was selected as the youth parliament member for Toowoomba North, but what she didn’t know was her peers would elect her as the opposition leader and shadow minister for agricultural industries, resources and rural development.
“On the first day we had the opportunity to nominate for leadership positions including the election of the premier, opposition leader and other cabinet roles, I put my hand up with no expectations,” Ms Nabizada said.
“When the short-listed candidates were announced, I was thrilled to be selected along with the youth member for Rockhampton.
“During the opening ceremony for sitting week, I was announced as the youth leader of the opposition along with my cabinet.
“It was an opportunity to bring the voice of my generation to our decision-makers.”
The year 11 Fairholme College student has always had an avid interest in politics and notably community service.
“It’s crucial to understand that politics has a great effect on numerous aspects of our life,” she said.
But, when finishing school Ms Nabizada has her eyes set on entering the STEM field to pursue her interest in science.
“I have loved science and maths subjects since I can remember and this field is essential in sustaining growth and advancing our nation,” she said.
The member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts was proud to support such an outstanding young individual.
“Let me just say, if this young woman pursues a career in politics later in life at either a state or federal level the people who elected her will be very well represented.”
