EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD
Emily Austin ATLANTIC BOOKS, RRP $28
It’s a fact. We’re all going to die. But if you’re an atheist, lesbian, animal-lover, liar, impersonator and hypochondriac who accidentally gets a job working at a Catholic church, at least it’s going to be an interesting journey to that final destination. Debut author Emily Austin has created a unique character who will capture your heart despite all her weird, macabre and anxiety-ridden ways. There are parts of this story that will make you cringe with embarrassment, break your heart because of the tenderness and empathy and also have you laughing out loud with the absurdity of it all. The novel is a real mixed bag that includes some fascinating insights into the human condition and relationships. At its centre is Gilda, 27 years old, depressed, lonely and in urgent need of psychological therapy but instead she ends up counselling others with her unique take on life. At times it is bleak and dark but this also helps showcase the light and humour.
