Clinton leaves hospital after sepsis health scare

-

LOS ANGELES: Former US president Bill Clinton has been released from a California hospital after spending five nights being treated for a serious infection.

Arm in arm with his wife and former presidential candidate Hillary, Mr Clinton, 75, gave a thumbs up after he walked slowly out of the hospital and shook hands with staff in front of television cameras.

“President Clinton was discharged from UC Irvine Medical Centre today,” said a statement by doctor Alpesh Amin released via a spokesman for the Clintons.

“His fever and white blood cell count are normalised and he will return home to New York to finish his course of antibiotics,” added Dr Amin, who led the team treating the former president.

Mr Clinton had been admitted to the hospital, just south of Los Angeles, last week with a non-Covid-related blood infection.

The New York Times, quoting an aide, reported Mr Clinton developed a urinary tract infection that turned into sepsis – which kills 270,000 in the US each year.

The infection was the latest health scare for America’s 42nd president. In 2004, he underwent a quadruple bypass operation after doctors found signs of extensive heart disease.

Six years later, he had stents implanted in his coronary artery. This prompted him to adopt a vegetarian diet and lose weight.
