Massive hay shed engulfed in flames

- TOM GILLESPIE

A FARMER in southwest Queensland has lost a “significant” amount of hay after a fire destroyed a massive shed filled to the roof with 800 bales.

Eight urban and rural fire crews did their best to bring the fire under control, which started inside a 100 metre-long shed on a property off Angry Jungle Road at Wallumbilla North, less than an hour east of Roma.

The incident was reported about 5pm on Monday, with the structure already engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

Crews worked to stop the fire spreading to nearby silos, but couldn’t save the building.

Fireys returned to the scene on Tuesday morning to fully extinguish the fire, which was still smouldering through the night.

The property has now been handed back to the owner.

The fire investigation unit has not been requested to attend the scene and the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
