AUSTRALIA’S hopes of qualifying for next year’s AFC Under-23 Asian Cup hinge on a two-legged qualifier against Indonesia following the withdrawals of China and Brunei Darussalam.

The Aussies, under the guidance of interim coach and national technical director Trevor Morgan, will meet Indonesia in neutral Tajikistan on Wednesday week and again on Saturday week, with the winner advancing to the Cup in Uzbekistan.

Both teams were initially in Group G of the qualifiers with China and Brunei Darussalam, who have both pulled out.

The Australian squad, which includes Poland-based ex-Brisbane Roar defender Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Germany-based former Perth Glory midfielder Jacob Italiano, is assembling in Dubai ahead of the trip to Tajikistan.

“It has been great to see how much it means to the players to come together,” Morgan said.

“They love representing Australia. We have been delighted with the energy and enthusiasm that the players have shown.

“The squad we’ve selected for next week’s qualifiers casts a real eye to the future, with the core of the squad age-eligible to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”
