POLICE PUT PROTESTERS ON THE SPOT

- COURTNEY GOULD

FEDERAL police have issued anti-vaccine protesters an ultimatum to move on or have their personal items seized by police.

The group, which caused dramatic scenes at Parliament House and outside of the National Press Club this week, has set up an illegal camp in Canberra’s parliamentary triangle.

But their hopes to remain in the capital until parliament resumes next week were dashed by ACT Police on Friday morning, as they were ordered to move on or be removed.

Police, assisted with additional resources from the Australian Federal Police, issued the warning for the campers about 7.30am, giving them an hour to get their stuff together.

Many of the campers have been driving down Canberra streets at speeds of 20km/h or less as a form of demonstration. No arrests have been made so far.

A major police presence at the entry to the makeshift campsite was formed on Thursday to prevent additional vehicles from joining the group.

Unauthorised camping is not permitted in the parliamentary precinct of the National Capital Authoritymanaged land.
