How to find the right group experience for you
There are all kinds of myths about group tours. Some believe they’re only for inexperienced travellers, or offer watered-down versions of destinations and experiences. Ignore the naysayers – the truth is there’s a tour out there for every kind of traveller. Here’s how to find your perfect match.
Savvy tip 1
Once you’ve determined your destination, interests and goals, be sure to check who – and how many people – you’re travelling with, advises Natalie James, general manager of On the Go Tours. “Touring groups can vary in size from two to 40 travellers so don’t be afraid to ask,” she says, “and also be aware of how many travellers are needed to ensure your departure is guaranteed.”
Savvy tip 2
Disregard the tour overview and go over the itinerary with a fine-tooth comb to see if it suits your interests, energy levels, comfort expectations and pace, Brett Mitchell of Intrepid Travel recommends. “Another important aspect of a trip is finding out what you want to see and do and if it is the right time of year.”
Savvy tip 3
Tempted by a super-low price? What looks cheap upfront could cost a lot more than you think once you start having to pay for meals, transfers, entrance fees and activities. Look for a tour that’s all-inclusive or at least has most of the basics covered so you know exactly how much your holiday will cost.
Savvy tip 4
Some tours are structured so that every hour of the day is accounted for, while others are loose, leaving you with plenty of free time to plan, play or rest. If you’re an introvert who requires plenty of solitude, look for a tour that leans towards the latter.
Savvy tip 5
When it comes to distances and how much time you’ll spend travelling from point to point, don’t take the tour operator’s word; check distances and times on Google Maps. This will give you a more precise understanding of how much time you’ll have for sightseeing (and how much time you’ll spend on a coach).
