20 YEARS OF CAFFEINE, FOOD, SMILES AND MEMORIES

- MORGAN BURLEY

FROM the introduction of social media to Garden Town’s demolishment, two cafe owners have been witness to many changes to the Garden City over their business’s 20 years.

Sisters and business owners Chrissy Hodgen and Bernadette Morrow established Two Birds’ Cafe and Catering 20 years ago this week, and have taken this time to thank their customers with a free lunch going to a lucky customer each day.

“We have had some really beautiful people come through over the years,” Mrs Hodgen said.

“Our children have grown up helping us here, and (the cafe) has been a real family business.”

The Garden City has been redesigned over the two decades, with the reconstruction of Grand Central the biggest disruption for the small business.

“It was three years of the street being blocked off and fences in front of our cafe,” Mrs Morrow said.

“It was such a massive change to the street … we survived through the tradies and some of our regulars who walked over to us.”

The sisters said while there were many challenges during the past decades, and changes in the hospitality industry and demands, they were proud of how far the business had come, and were incredibly thankful to all who had supported them.
