- JOSH HANRAHAN

A MAN was fighting for life after being seriously injured when a drag racing car exploded as it was being fixed, with the entire shocking incident captured on live TV.

The massive explosion occurred just after 5pm on Saturday at Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney’s west and resulted in a man in his 20s being rushed to Westmead Hospital with serious burns to his body.

Three other people were taken to Westmead, Concord and Royal North Shore Hospitals with minor burns.

The incident occurred on the second night of the Australian Top Fuel Championship which was being live-streamed online and broadcast on Channel 7. Reporter Chad Neylon was presenting just metres from where the yellow car of top driver Phil Read exploded.

The incident saw sparks sent flying into the air while several crew members working on the car were directly over the top of it. Neylon instinctively ducked for cover as the explosion rang out, before the camera panned back to show a member of the car’s pit crew had been knocked to the ground.
