CHANCE TO HOOK AN ELITE ISLAND FISHING RESORT

- CHRIS HERDE

A REMOTE far north Queensland island resort described as the “ultimate fisherman's paradise” – where many a tall tale has been told – is on the market for the first time.

The exclusive world-renowned Sweers Island Resort in the Gulf of Carpentaria, which has forward bookings of more than 1000 bed nights and climbing, has a dedicated following among cashed-up overseas and Australian anglers.

Tex and Lyn Battle, who were granted a perpetual lease over 30ha of the 8km long and 2km wide island 34 years ago, are selling the resort business with a price tag of $3.95m.

Private Islands Online’s Richard Vanhoff said the island resort was “all about fishing”.

“It’s geared up for anglers who can afford to get up there,” he said.

“The phones have been running hot since it got out there and most of the inquiry has come from groups of people."

In the dry tropics, the island is surrounded by rock reef with coral and has a 1100m runway and a fishing fleet for anglers. Accommodation ranges from twobed cabins to six-bed family cabins and bed nights average about $450.

Additionally, there are open-air dining and bar facilities with a liquor licence.

Mr Vanhoff said it was a first-time opportunity to own part of Sweers Island with a world-renowned resort business.

“There is a great opportunity to bring Sweers Island tourist resort with fishing and adventure tours into a new phase with fresh new business ideas and a brilliant future,” he said.

“No other land for lease will be made available on any islands within the Gulf of Carpentaria for the use as resort business, so no competition.”
