Energy project powers on

- TOM GILLESPIE

A MASSIVE new hydro-electric project slated for Toowoomba’s main water source, that could create hundreds of new jobs, is expected to reach a key stage by the end of this year.

BE Power and GE Renewable Energy’s plan for a pumped hydro plant at Lake Cressbrook is currently at the third stage of the five-step tender process and they hope to move it forward by late 2022.

The project, which works like a giant battery to store energy for use at peak times, could create up to 1000 jobs during construction.

The council, which received an update on it last month, would also be compensated as they own the body of water.

Mayor Paul Antonio said the fourth stage would focus on how the concept could fit in with the council’s water security plans for the region.

“Water is one of our most precious resources, and the proposed project must not adversely affect the region’s water security,” he said.

“Stage four of the tender process is expected to commence in late 2022, subject to BE Power progressing a range of development studies.”
