- PETER HARDWICK

A 29-YEAR-OLD man with a shocking history of violence has been jailed for strangling his de facto wife.

Jermaine Alan Williams and his partner were lying on the bed listening to music on May 10, 2019, when he grabbed her around the throat, claiming it was a joke, Toowoomba District Court has heard.

He told her to whistle but she couldn’t because of him holding her, the District Court heard

Despite her protests, he repeated the action, the District Court heard.

Though she remained in the bed with him out of fear, the woman went to police three days later.

Crown prosecutor Nicole Friedewald said she couldn’t explain why police hadn’t charged Williams until March, 2021, after he had been jailed for other offences of violence.

Williams’ past offending including numerous assaults, some against women, and one grievous bodily harm matter.

Judge Katherine McGuinness sentenced Williams to the 224 days he had already spent in jail and released him forthwith.
