Big wet forces changes

- SEAN TEUMA

HERE’S the latest on Downs sport and wet weather for this weekend.

RUGBY UNION

With a number of council run grounds, some competitions have been forced to cancel fixtures this weekend.

“Downs Rugby respects the jurisdiction of council and university grounds,” Downs Rugby general manager Matt Hammond said.

A decision was made on Thursday to cancel all scheduled senior fixtures, with the teenage and junior games also abandoned.

AUSSIE RULES

With a number of regional grounds in action this weekend, there is a strong possibility of AFL Darling Downs fixtures going ahead.

AFLDD competition manager Jana Anderson said at this stage Goondiwindi and Warwick can host games, with University transferring its home game against the Swans to Dalby.

There is currently a question mark over the status of Coolaroo and Toowoomba, scheduled for Rockville Park.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Only one fixture for this week is conducted on a council run ground (Platz Oval, Clifton), leaving the door open for play across the region should the weather subside.

TRL president Joe Hannant said player safety would come to the fore with decisions to be made closer to game time on the individual status of each ground.

HOCKEY

Clyde Park has felt the force of the rain, with Thursday night games cancelled and the Southern Cross U18s tournament on Sunday also abandoned.

Toowoomba Hockey’s Matt Cook said a decision would be made at midday on Friday as to the status of A1 games on Friday and Saturday’s President’s Cup fixtures.
