KISUKANO EYES UP BIG WIN

Talented Toowoomba mare looks to break win drought today

- SEAN TEUMA

IT’S been a long time between “winning salutes” for Toowoomba runner Kisukano.

The talented mare has a winless drought stretching back almost a year, but trainer Michael Nolan is confident she’ll get the job done this weekend.

The four-year-old mare lines up in the $150,000 Listed Bright Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday as she looks to push past $1m in career prizemoney.

She’s affectionately known as Cindy around the stable, and the Michael Nolan yard is hoping Kisukano can bounce back to her best form this weekend.

Nolan believes her first two runs to start the preparation put her in good stead to break a winless drought stretching almost a year.

“She just got beat first up at the (Gold) Coast and then was defeated narrowly at Eagle Farm,” he said.

“Third up she drew 14 of 14 at Doomben and it wasn’t Jaden Lloyd’s fault, but she got caught in no man’s land.”

The current track record holder over the six furlongs at Eagle Farm, Kisukano looks set to benefit from the decision by Racing Queensland to switch the meeting from Doomben with the wet weather experienced this week.

“I thought she could land in the one out, one back position,” Nolan said.

“She can race there provided she jumps well. There’s a couple of fillies with a bit of pace, but if she jumps clean she could lead any field she wanted to.

“It was a great call (to change venue early). Everyone knows where they are running and we’re lucky that we have a track to fall back on during the Winter Carnival.”

Kisukano is one of three Toowoomba entries for the sprint, with Eloquently (Steve Tregea) and Winside (Corey and Kylie Geran) also engaged. The latter is an emergency and requires one more scratching to earn a start in the $150k event.
