Swans cause boilover in Dalby

- SEAN TEUMA

THE local sporting weekend was decimated with wet weather as closed grounds and road closures played havoc with fixtures on the Darling Downs.

Downs Rugby and Toowoomba Rugby League saw all their fixtures for the weekend cancelled, with Warwick hit particularly hardest on Friday.

Intense rainfall saw the Queens Park ovals and home of the Cowboys, Water Rats and Wolves go under.

DALBY CAUSES AFLDD UPSET

Every senior fixture bar one was called off in the AFL Darling Downs competition, with a result for the ages playing out.

For the first time in 15 years, the Dalby Swans were able to claim the scalp of the University Cougars, coming away with a 7.9 (51) to 7.5 (47) victory on home soil.

The match was originally to take place at USQ, but with the state of the oval, the clubs opted to move the fixture to Dalby to prevent it from being cancelled.

It gives the Swans their second win of the season after a first round defeat of South Burnett.

STATEWIDE FIXTURES POSTPONED

The highly anticipated Ruby Series clash between the Darling Downs Panthers and Carina Tigers has been set for a later date.

The two sides came to a mutual agreement with the road conditions playing havoc. The game was set to take place at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

It was a similar fate for the Western Clydesdales in the Hastings Deering Colts, with their road trip to Townsville put on hold.

Both SWQ Thunder men’s and women’s teams found themselves in the same boat, with their respective fixtures against Mitchelton and Virginia United postponed.

Fixtures are expected to return to normal across a range of sports this weekend.
