Candidate denies Climate 200 links

- TOM GILLESPIE

INDEPENDENT candidate for Groom Suzie Holt again been forced to dismiss claims that she is part of the “teal independent” movement funded by lobby group Climate 200.

Ms Holt, who is running on similar policies and promises as several independents in New South Wales and Victoria such as action on climate change and an anti-corruption commission, said she never received donations from the group.

“It has been suggested that our campaign is being funded by Simon Holmes a Court’s Climate 200 lobby group,” she said in a statement.

“This could not be further from the truth.

“Our campaign is a true community, grassroots effort that has been funded by family and many generous individual donations.

“My dedicated volunteers have been working hard for months so that we were prepared for this election campaign.”

It comes as Ms Holt hopes to launch an upset over the major parties by winning over disaffected Liberal voters in Toowoomba.

Ms Holt said she had no links to any group outside of the one she co-founded, known as Voices of Groom.

“Unlike the major parties, who accept funds from large corporate donors, my campaign is based on grassroot support,” she said.

“I am running because our community wants to see a higher standard of representation in our region and people are responding really well to this message.”

Ms Holt also denied she had ever been a Liberal Party member, though she told The Chronicle last week her father had been previously.
