Neighbours fear prowler

- HOLLY CORMACK

THERE are fears a prowler is on the loose in Nanango, with a 14-year-old girl reporting a strange man with a “chilling voice” watching her shower, and others reporting underwear missing from clotheslines and faces staring at them through windows.

A Nanango family was left shaken after they say a man crept into their backyard and watched a teen girl shower, before another woman entered the bathroom to see a stranger’s face staring through the window.

Betina Leigh said her 14year-old daughter was showering on Sunday night when she heard rustling in the grass outside.

“She heard a noise and said she felt as if someone was watching her, like a man’s voice telling her to ‘shut up’,” Ms Leigh said.

“I've got a lot of family staying with us at the moment, so she just thought it was one of the kids messing around. She didn’t mention anything at first.”

Ms Leigh’s sister was next to take a shower and after a short while heard a deep voice call out, “Oi”.

She turned to see a man’s face looking at her through the window, Ms Leigh said.

“She slammed the window shut and came screaming and running to me very distraught. She’s still today very edgy and jumpy,” Ms Leigh said.

“She said his voice was really deep and chilling. She can just hear it over and over and over in her head.

“My sister’s pretty tough, and to have her as frightened as she is now, I think it’ll take some time before she’s back to normal.”

The family found footprints in their backyard but they believe the young woman’s screams scared away the prowler.

“My house definitely doesn't feel safe today. My sister’s wanting to go get security cameras and stuff,” Ms Leigh said. “At the moment everyone’s on edge and just jumpy. Just for the fact that someone is still creeping around.”

Ms Leigh said her daughter said she’d seen someone outside her bedroom window in recent months.

“We sort of dismissed it after we went outside and couldn’t see anything, but that makes me think he’s been around for a while,” she said.

After posting her family’s experience to social media, Ms Leigh said it appeared other women in town have also experienced some strange goings-on recently.

These include a neighbour whose underwear has been going missing off her clothes line, and an elderly woman who reported an attempted break-in late Saturday night.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers patrolled the areas after Ms Leigh reported it, but did not locate a suspect.

Investigations are ongoing.
