Big impact in small drop

HAIRDRESSER’S CONSCIOUS, CHEMICAL-FREE INITIATIVE

- RHYLEA MILLAR

AFTER she witnessed the impact a chronic skin condition had on her son, Samantha Moir decided to look for alternative ways to relieve his symptoms.

Severe Eczema left her young child scarred, in pain and hospitalised multiple times – a sight which would break the heart of any parent.

In a bid to help relieve his symptoms, the mother-oftwo began to research natural and chemical-free creams.

“If he didn’t have his creams and medications for a couple of days, his body would basically go into a withdrawal from the chemicals and cause a reaction,” Ms Moir said.

“He’s been using my cream for about five years and looking at him now, you wouldn’t think he was the same child – there’s no more itching, dry skin or redness and his scarring is gone.”

After witnessing the positive results of the handmade product, Ms Moir replaced all the chemical-based items in her home with alternatives made from organic oils and herbs.

Now, she has started new business Moir Organics and is set to launch her first consciously-made product – a multipurpose remedy hair oil in days.

Ms Moir said the response had already been positive with many people now seeking consciously-made ranges with intention.

“Hair products are typically alcohol-based and make your hair a lot drier, so then you need to buy products to deal with that which causes this dependency cycle,” she said.

“My hair oil does what it’s supposed to do so not only will you see the hairdresser less, but it’s also environmentally-friendly which means when you wash it out, you don’t feel bad about what goes down the drain.”

Ms Moir who has been a qualified hairdresser for 15 years, also started her own home-based hair salon late last year.

She said as a result of Covid-19, she discovered there was a need for self-sufficiency, which led to the creation of her two ventures.

Passionate about offering a more personalised experience, Ms Moir said the homebased studio offered the opportunity to really connect with clients – something she felt she missed in a more commercialised salon environment.

The Moir Organics hair oil will be available to purchase online from Monday, while the release of the skin cream is expected to occur in the coming months.

Additional cleaning, hair and skin care ranges are also in the works.
