The German Wife

Kelly Rimmer: Hachette, $33

- MERCEDES MAGUIRE

Rimmer is a master at finding a littleknown part of a huge topic like World War II and exploring it through fantastic fiction. The stories of two women converge in this book: Lizzie who grows up on the family’s Texas farm but escapes to the city during the 1930’s dust bowl drought; and Sofia, a German woman and wife of a rocket scientist who lives through the tumultuous build-up to World War II. The two women meet in Huntsville, Alabama in 1950, where a group of German families has been relocated by the US government after the war to work on the space project. As rumours of “Nazis” living in their midst emerge, tensions in the small, segregated town build.
