1848 OTTO LILIENTHAL German aviator

Lilienthal was the first person to make welldocume­nted, repeated, successful flights with gliders and he was able to develop the concept of the modern wing. Lilienthal’s glider stalled and crashed in 1896. He broke his neck and died the next day.

1900 HANS FRANK Nazi war criminal

Frank served as head of the General Government in Nazioccupi­ed Poland in World War II. He instituted a reign of terror against the population and was involved in the exterminat­ion of Jews. Frank was found guilty of war crimes and executed.

1933 GARY BURDEN American artist

Burden was one of the pioneers of the concept of album cover art. He created album covers for Neil Young for 35 years, but also designed covers for performare­s including The Doors, The Eagles, and Joni Mitchell.

1936 ROBERT SANGSTER English thoroughbr­ed owner

Sangster’s horses won 27 European Classics and more than 100 Group One races, including two Epson Derbys, four Irish Derbys, two French Derbys and three Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes. Sangers’s Beldale Ball won the 1980 Melbourne Cup.

1944 JOHN NEWCOMBE Australian tennis player

Newcombe is one of only a few men to have attained the world No. 1 ranking in singles and doubles. At the majors, he won seven singles titles (three Wimbledon, two Australian and two US) and a then-record 17 doubles titles.
