HISTORY IS IN FASHION AT PRIMARY SCHOOL

- OLIVIA JENKINS

STUDENTS’ wardrobes are taking a step back in time at Footscray Primary School to celebrate the school’s history this week.

Olden day costumes and fashion through the ages before technology existed is the dress code for the school’s Education Week festivities, which this year mark 150 years of public school education in Victoria.

From Tuesday, state schools across Victoria can participate in a range of art, storytelling and music activities.

With history dating back about 163 years, the campus is currently the site of a $22m STEM building development being built next to its three heritage-listed buildings.

Principal Jenny Briggs said the school’s history was being preserved alongside the new facilities, with its original bell tower still intact and ready to ring in the school days next week.

Ms Briggs’ own connection with the school stretches back decades, with her grandmother having attended the formerly named Geelong Road State School during the 1930s.
