Eagles swoop on Gatton

- SEAN TEUMA

RUGBY LEAGUE: The last two remaining undefeated teams in the TRL had their colours lowered at the weekend.

At a temporary home ground of Glenholme Park, Highfields proved too strong for Gatton, coming away for a 20-10 win in testing conditions.

Matthew Prowse and Cory McGrady helped the Eagles open up a 12-0 lead midway through the first half, and despite the best efforts of talented outside back Tyson White, who scored a double for the Hawks, they were unable to close the gap.

Hooker Thomas Hatch scored late in the piece to get them over the line.

“Through the first 10-20 minutes we were pretty red hot,” captain Campbell Stewart told TRL Media.

“We did everything that we planned to do like completions and aggression in defence.

“At one stage (our completions) were two from 13. On one hand we were atrocious, but on the other our defence was full of guts.”

Goondiwindi held out a determined Wattles side to end the Warriors’ unbeaten start to 2022.

A Geoff Prince double helped the Boars to come away with an 18-12 victory at Gilbert Oval, creating a logjam of five teams at the top of the TRL Agrade standings.

“Wattles turned up to play and we knew they would,” Goondiwindi assistant coach Brad Frost told TRL Media.

“They had nothing to lose, and I’m just glad our boys showed up.

“Mickey (Hazzard) is one of a kind for his size. He plays like that week in, week out. Everyone knows that.

“Defending three or four sets on your line, being able to do it and spoil the party for them, we didn’t just do it once, we did it numerous times.

“That’s a big thing. We always work on our defence and we know we can score the points.”

Sunday’s other matches saw Warwick hold solid in sixth spot with a 36-16 defeat of Oakey at Trevor Mickleborough Oval.

New recruit Byron Creighton again showed why he is such a valuable asset for the Cowboys, finishing with a hattrick.

Dalby overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit at Pittsworth to overcome the Danes 16-12.

Tevita Folau got the job done in the second half for the Diehards with a double, with Travis Babington’s try in the final 10 minutes getting them in front.
