LE TOOT BRINGS TRUMPETS TO THE GARDEN CITY

- CHLOE GRIMSHAW

TRUMPETS are coming to Toowoomba this month in a unique show delivering a 12-piece ensemble to inspire budding musicians to pick up an instrument.

Usually limited to the capital cities, Le Toot will bring a mix of jazz, folk and classical music to St Patrick’s Cathedral at 2pm on Saturday.

Trumpeter Cameron Smith grew up in the Toowoomba region before moving away in 2006.

Now he is back and he’s bringing the magic of music with him.

Mr Smith said for a trumpet ensemble to be playing a regional show was highly unusual, and he hoped it would reach Toowoomba’s younger generation.

“You wouldn’t see this too much around regional areas; there are a couple of trumpet ensembles in Brisbane through the conservatorium but this is very unusual,” he said.

“A few of us in the group are teachers, and we are always looking to build up our programs, create a vibe among the younger musicians and hope they might take up the trumpet.”

Following the art sector’s struggle through the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Smith said the ensemble was looking forward to playing a show without social distancing.

“Just getting to get together with a group of 12 musicians feels like a novelty,” he said.

“When I first booked the gig it was looking to be a socially distanced event, but now it doesn’t have to be, it is lovely to be able to play again.”

Tickets costing $10 are available at the door.
