BEN’S FUTURE TAKING FLIGHT WITH DRONES

- CHLOE GRIMSHAW

THE sky is the limit for world champion drone racer Ben Mortensen, who will use his passion for flying to inspire students at the Darling Downs Science and Engineering Challenge this week.

A virtual sport that has gained popularity over the past decade, drone racing involves manoeuvring drones at speeds of up to 200kmh through obstacle courses.

It isn’t just racing drones that is becoming popular, the use of drones is also soaring in a number of industries.

Now a student at the University of Southern Queensland, Mr Mortensen said he hoped to inspire students to get involved in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) fields of work.

“Drone racing is a great STEM-based hobby, and it requires coding, maths and physics, which are all important for young people to learn and develop skills in,” Mr Mortensen said. “I hope my experience will push some people to take a similar path I did into drone racing or pursue something they’re passionate about in STEM.”
