Drugged-up Macca’s rage

- MICHAEL NOLAN

FAST food workers were treated to a bizarre display when an allegedly drug-affected man fell asleep while attempting to navigate the McDonald’s drive-through at Wilsonton.

Darling Downs City Patrol Group Inspector Paul James alleged that staff found Daniel Stephen Wright asleep about 11.30pm on Monday and phoned paramedics.

They arrived and suspected the 24-year-old Cambooya man was drug-affected so they called in police back-up.

Police established the car, a Nissan Qashqai, was stolen and blocked one end of the drive-through with their vehicle while the paramedics blocked the other end.

The man is alleged to have flown into a rage when police woke him up and attempted to flee.

He is alleged to have repeatedly rammed the emergency services vehicle before police deployed their pepper spray and tasers, smashed the driver’s side window with their batons and dragged the man from the vehicle.

Inspector James alleged police located a quantity of drugs and a set of stolen licence plates in the vehicle before arresting the man.

He is charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possessing tainted property, unlawful possession of weapons, serious assault police officer, two drug offences and three unlicensed driving offences.

Wright was not required to be in Toowoomba Magistrates Court when his charges were mentioned on Tuesday with his solicitor Brad Skuse telling the court his client was on parole, which was expected to be suspended.

Mr Skuse said there would be no application for bail and asked for a four week adjournment.

Magistrate Kay Phillipson remanded Wright in custody and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on July 21.
