Coolaroo makes big statement

- SEAN TEUMA

IN front of a dedicated crowd at Rockville Oval, Coolaroo cemented itself as the team to beat in the AFLDD Allieds Cup with another huge win.

As the league celebrates Sir Doug Nicholls Round, the Roos wore special Indigenous strips in their success over Goondiwindi.

AUSSIE RULES: Coolaroo stamped its authority on the Allied Cup competition as it cruised to its fourth straight win to start the 2022 season.

The Roos claimed a 14.6 (90) to 0.1 (1) victory over Goondiwindi at a wet and windy Rockville Park, creating a buffer between them and the chasing pack.

As the AFL Darling Downs and its member teams celebrated the first weekend of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, Coolaroo stood out in their Indigenous jerseys, with Jayden Smith claiming the Phil Dreise Medal for best on ground.

University bounced back to winning ways in style, putting a big score on South Burnett to the tune of 19.6 (120) to 1.2 (8) in Kingaroy.

Desperate to make amends for a narrow loss to Dalby the week prior, the Cougars bit back hard, leading from start to finish to return to Toowoomba with the four points.

In the solitary senior women’s game of the weekend, three goals apiece to Alison Moore, Christina Ash and Shaye Easton proved the difference.

The Hawks recorded a convincing 10.6 (66) to 0.2 (2) defeat of South Burnett in Kingaroy to claim their second win of the season.

Wet weather again played its part with the closure of Southern Cross Reserve, forcing the men’s and women’s Toowoomba v South Toowoomba fixtures to be postponed.

The state of WCU Oval in Warwick also meant the Redbacks v Swans fixture faced a similar fate.

The Tigers, Redbacks and Bombers will have gone a fortnight without football by the time round six rolls along.
