Last ditch penalty leads Norths past champions

- SEAN TEUMA

HOCKEY: Norths took home some sort of revenge for last year’s A1 men’s grand final.

In a rematch of last year’s decider, a last minute penalty corner from Carter Mogg guided Norths to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Red Lion at Clyde Park.

The two sides were evenly matched throughout the contest, with Norths coming from two goals behind to level up the scores, and again overturning a 3-2 deficit in the 65th minute to level things up, before Mogg’s matchwinner at the death.

The win gives Norths an outright advantage at the top of the standings ahead of Red Lion, with Newtown and Past High sharing third on six points.

The two sides clashed at the weekend, with Newtown coming away with the spoils of a 4-2 victory.

Josh McPaul continued his good form with a double.

The Past High women maintained top spot with a 3-1 defeat of Newtown.

The Hawks scored all of their goals in the first half to open up a buffer that would not be run down by their rivals.

Red Lion kept within touching distance of the leaders with a clinical 4-1 victory over Norths.

A solid team performance saw four different scorers get on the board, with two penalty corner conversions gifting them a solid lead.

This week sees a rematch of last year’s women’s grand final when Past High and Rangeville collide on Friday night.

The men’s highlight comes in the form of up and comers Norths trying to hold Newtown at bay.
