Cycling through life at GemLife Highfields resort
WHEN it comes to keeping fit, there are homeowners at GemLife Highfields over-50s lifestyle resort who just seem to cycle through life.
Phil Cook is among residents committed to regularly getting on their bikes and riding up to 30 kilometres in and around the Highfields resort.
“We have lived in this area for many years and only had to move four kilometres when we bought a home at GemLife Highfields resort, so I am very familiar with the great places to cycle in the area. When you cycle there is always something new to see each day,” said Phil, who was given his first bike at the age of 14.
A former coalminer, Phil had given cycling away at one stage but was surprised to run into an old cycling buddy while working at the mines in Blackwater during the 1980s and it wasn’t long before his interest was renewed, an activity that remains an important part of his life to this day.
“I haven’t looked back since then and just love it. Cycling gives me a lot of enjoyment, keeps me fit and is so relaxing,” he said.
Phil is not the only cycling enthusiast at GemLife Highfields, where keeping fit and active is encouraged with facilities ranging from a swimming pool and gym to tennis courts and so much more.
“Bike riding is a regular activity for many residents with a group of cyclists, new and experienced, meeting each Tuesday for a ride,” said Phil.
At 72, Phil said he has come a long way with his cycling since getting his first Huffy bicycle as a teen and believes others should give it a try.
“Cycling can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I’d recommend they start on a basic model bike until they are sure it is what they really want to do, enter some of the great charity rides like Toowoomba’s Ride the Range to gain more experience, and take it from there. It has certainly been a great ride for me.”
