Milestone birthday for lovely lady

-

Today, Glynn Ethel Young celebrates her 90th birthday

Glynn was born in 1932 at Southport Queensland to Toby and Dora McGuire. The family lived in the Numinbah Valley until the end of 1937 when the family moved to Beechmont where both Glynn and her older brother Kevin attended Beechmont State School.

In the early 1940s the family moved from Beechmont to Southport, and both attended Southport State School. The move to Southport was because Glynn’s father had enlisted in the Australian Army to fight in World War 11.

When he left, she did not know it would be the last time Glynn was to see her father as he passed away as a POW working on Hellfire Pass in Thailand.

On completion of her primary schooling, Glynn attended Presbyterian Girls College in Warwick.

After leaving school, Glynn was employed as a telephonist in the PMG at the Southport Exchange. It was while working at the PMG that she met her forever partner, Doug Young in 1956 at a tennis game between the telephonists and the technicians.

They were married at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Southport, in August 1957. After the honeymoon they lived on the Gold Coast for a short time before spending several years travelling the east coast of Queensland with Doug’s works as a PMG technician installing telephone exchanges. While in Mackay, their first daughter Anne was born, followed by their son

Greg at Southport and then daughter Wendy at Toowoomba.

While in Toowoomba, they decided to plant their roots and build a family home in Wilsonton, where they still live today. Glynn was a stay-at-home mum up until her early 40s when she accepted a position as library aide at North State School Toowoomba, a position she held until her retirement in her mid-60s.

On her retirement, She and Doug enjoyed travelling around Australia and overseas. Prior to her deteriorating eyesight, she loved to read, watch old movies, knit and sew.

Glynn and Doug have three children, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and one of her favourite pastimes is spending time with her family.

A family celebration will be held this weekend to celebrate her milestone.
