Doueihi’s No.6 wish could be granted

- MARTIN GABOR

ADAM Doueihi has refused to comment on reports that surfaced last week suggesting he told interim coach Brett Kimmorley to pick him in the halves in NSW Cup rather than play centre for the NRL side, but he could still find himself back in the No.6 jersey.

The 23-year-old played a straight bat when speaking about it for the first time since the story came out.

“I’m not going to comment about that,” he said after Saturday’s 28-20 loss to Parramatta that has the Tigers in last spot.

“I went all right. I didn’t do anything special. I thought I did my job but had a few lapses on our edge in defence.”

The halves conundrum is something Kimmorley must sort out soon because three does not go into two.

Brooks and Jackson Hastings have been the preferred option for most of the season, but the results just aren’t there and it’s time to give Doueihi a chance to add to the 14 appearances he made at No.6 last year when he was the club’s best player.

Kimmorley’s hand may be forced, with Hastings in doubt for the clash against ladderleaders Penrith next week after he stayed down in pain clutching his knee. He played on but will have scans on Monday.

“It was pretty scary at the time,” said Hastings, who wore plenty of ice on his knee at the post-match press conference.

“I thought I’d done my knee with the pain I was in initially. Once someone ran out and settled me down, I calmed down. It was a bit clicky during the game, but fingers crossed it’s nothing too serious.”

If Hastings is unavailable then Doueihi will certainly shift back to the halves where he can unleash more of the spiral bombs we saw on Saturday.
