TO ICONIC MUSICAL SHAKE UP EMPIRE

- RHYLEA MILLAR

THEATRE enthusiasts will have the opportunity to take a trip to Rio without even leaving the Garden City when The Boy From Oz returns to the Empire Theatre.

The musical follows the story of Peter Allen, who first started his musical career singing in Aussie pubs at the age of 11, before eventually being discovered by Judy Garland and rising to international fame.

After producing the show in 2011, Empire Theatre’s general manager Kerry Saul said it would be the first time the theatre had repeated a show due to its success.

“We think it’s a bit nationalistic – it’s about Australia and it’s a little bit of home so we think that’s a great way to kick off 2023,” Mr Saul said.

Auditions are now open with the creative team looking to find 30 talented cast members, including for four or five lead spots.

“We’re hoping Hugh Jackman will put his hand up, but that’s kind of unlikely,” Mr Saul said.

To celebrate the theatre’s 25th anniversary, the show will be its major production next year.

Presented by Mort and Co, The Boy From Oz will be at the Empire Theatre from March 17 to 26. Tickets are available to purchase from today.
